Demonstration Projects

Electricity systems are undergoing a remarkable transformation as a result of environmental pressure to switch to low-carbon sources of electricity generation and changes to the structure of energy markets.

The electricity system of the future promises to be dominated by low carbon renewable energy technologies and energy storage, organized in decentralized configurations and enabled by liberalized energy markets. What would this look like? Islands of low-carbon generation owned and operated by many different players in the energy market, intelligently networked to support the needs of energy users.

With this vision of an environmentally sustainable future, Emera Caribbean Renewables is directing its research and development efforts toward the integration of solar PV and battery storage along with micro-grid technologies. We are pursuing partnerships with higher education as we anticipate the new combinations of services and technologies necessary to create a Barbados 100% powered by renewable energy, and transform the energy systems of the wider Caribbean.
